Sometimes you want to get away from it all, and you can't get much farther away than Northern Scotland where the wind nearly knocks you off your feet and the stunning views leave you breathless.
While staying near the northernmost edge of mainland Britain we lodged at Freswick Castle, a structure with Viking and Medieval architecture but very much updated to make for a comfortable stay. We enjoyed exploring historic sites along the coast with our cheerful and knowledgeable tour guides, Royston and Vikki, hikes along the sea cliffs, mornings around the fireplace, convivial conversation over meals at the castle, tastings of excellent Scottish whiskies, and more.
We also spent time in the beautiful Highlands city of Inverness, and scouted for Nessie on a boat tour of Loch Ness.
The austere beauty of Northern Scotland and the warmth and charm of the people and culture keep making us want to return there.
